American pop music c. 2008 sounds and feels a lot like the last decade of European pop. That's to say, it's soulless, race-neutral, sex-neutral club fare. Not even Mariah Carey is going off on Mariah Carey-esque melismatic runs. Justin Timberlake chose a chant-y, off-beat track as the lead single for his last album. Chris Brown and Rihanna (who are apparently dating...I swear I don't read US Weekly) have flat voices that play much better over discotheque bleeps than more-organic ballad-y backgrounds. And a robot (T-Pain) is currently the most marketable figure in R&B after inheriting the title from an android (Akon) 18 months ago.
Always the man with his fingers on the pulse of popular music, Usher's lead single is the logical progression of what he's been observing during his hiatus. The song's a mash of autotuned vocals, chopped up techno synths, and bumping drums - this aint your daddy's R&B. Even with the youngest of the Jeezys' cameo on the remix, there is almost no way that this song can justify it's placement on an R&B chart.
That said, I can't get enough of Polow's GarageBand-made beat.
