Song of the Day: Sexual Healing
"Thanks for the drink," I say, all the while dreading the prospect of choking down the Cuba Libre just handed to me.
Ever since Spring Break Jamaica, I've hated rum and I think I came out of the womb disgusted by the syrupy-sweetness of Coke (did you know that shit can melt pennies?!?). I guess I could accidentally spill the drink all over the bartop to discolor the muted neon pound notes, balled-up bar napkins, and abandoned receipts. Except that I fear my cousin is enough of a gentleman to take that as a cue to buy me another and that's not an inexpensive proposition at a joint that calls rum-and-cokes "Cuba Libres." So, I smile convincingly before preparing, grim-faced, for the task at hand.
Then, a song I've heard before comes on. An 8-minute, swelling, cacophonous, and ebullient remake of a song from a musician that every living human should be very wary of mimicking. Marvin Gaye was a one-off. Best leave Marvin songs for Marvin - unless you do them something like this. Unless you do them with a persistent tuba, spurting brass, and a hoarse chorus of men who are probably more in need of sexual healing than a R&B Adonis ever was.
I guess I could spill some of this drink singing and dancing...
