Belle & Sebastian do mopey music as well as anybody else. Even when they go uptempo, Stuart Murdoch's tone makes it clear that he could care less. That's exactly what I wanted to hear this morning.
On "The State I Am In," Belle & Sebastian write one of the most pathetic songs in their collection. Everything that could go wrong, does. For the sake of example, let's say a Canadian chick (we'll call her Alanis) got this idea around 1995/1996, I think it would be similar to "Ironic." Except for Belle & Sebastian have a conception of subtlety. All of the jokes are so deadpan, that they just kinda wash over you. It's like raaiiin.
