Critics have been sharpening phrases synonymous with polarizing, be-cardiganed Ivy League quartet for a year now - loaded phrases that are meant to convert a peculiarly elusive band into something that's easier to condemn. Prepare for the backlash:
And prepare for that backlash to be unbalanced, reactive, and oddly resentful. Often, sportswriters don't applaud performers that can match them intellectually (see: Reggie Jackson). Nor do music writers. If writers aren't smarter, then they're just a bunch of guys that can't play as well as they've always wished.
